North Iceland: Snorkeling tour in volcanic sands

This unique Snorkeling tour in North Iceland is an exclusive experience, if you want to try something out of the box, this activity is for you!

The river Litlaá, where the adventure takes place, was formed by a volcanic eruption in 1976. The river mixes the warm hot spring waters with the colder water from a close by river. The area is not deep and thanks to its crystal-clear waters, it is possible to witness first hands bubbling volcanic sands on the river’s floor, twirling and floating with the contrast in the background of a lavish green field of algae: a once in a lifetime opportunity!

Your tour starts with a detailed briefing and the tour guide will help you gear up. Afterwards you enter a magnificent underwater world together. You will see the beautiful colours of the volcanic sands and green algae. The conjunction of the different elements and colours, creates a sight that cannot be found elsewhere in Iceland.

Important Information about the start of the tour: Participants do not require prior snorkeling experience, and this tour is suitable for beginners. You float on the water, and it is extremely easy to maneuver in the water in the drysuits. The water is at a nice temperature of 12-17°C but you will also be very well protected from getting cold by a drysuit that covers your whole body. On your hands and head, you wear a wet-suit material that quickly heats up from your own body heat. People wearing glasses must wear contact lenses, but eyeglasses are impossible.

All participants aged 60 or older and all participants under a doctor’s care for any ongoing medical condition must get their doctor’s clearance for this tour. The medical form to bring to your doctor can be viewed and downloaded here.

Please bring long underwear, thick socks, and a small towel. It is not possible to wear glasses – please bring contact lenses if needed.

Please note that the minimum number of participants is 2 people for the tour to go ahead. You will be refunded if the minimum is not met.
