Lake Mývatn is a wonderful area in the North of Iceland but unfortunately relatively far away from Reykjavik. Visit this area with its magnificent landscape by plane and explore all highlights in an unforgettable day tour. This lake Mývatn day tour is the perfect tour for all travelers who have not enough time for an Iceland round trip but do not want to miss the highlights of the mystical Lake Mývatn area.
Transfer on your own to the domestic airport in Reykjavik and take a flight to Akureyri in the North of Iceland. On a clear day, you can enjoy Iceland from the air since you overfly the uninhabited highlands and a big glacier. Your guide is waiting for you at the airport in Akureyri. On your way to Mývatn, you will stop at the stunning waterfall Goðafoss.
During your lake Mývatn day tour, you will visit the Skútustaðagígar craters that were formed by gas explosions when lava flowed over the wetlands. You will also see Dimmuborgir, where you find a huge lava field and very interesting formations. The name Dimmuborgir can be translated as “Dark Castles” and it was often told that it is the entrance to hell. Another highlight on your tour is Grjótagjá, a small lava cave with a thermal spring inside. Close by is Námafjall a geothermal area with boiling mud pools, steaming fumaroles and sulfur pits.
Krafla volcano area is your next destination in this tour. It is a powerful volcano that erupted the last time in 1984. You will also have a look at the crater Víti that was formed in 1724 in the Mývatnseldar eruption.
Mývatn Nature Baths – Last Stop of your Lake Myvatn from Reykjavik Day Tour
In your last stop, you will visit the Myvatn Nature Baths – a wonderful geothermal spa where you can relax and unwind in a magical environment (entrance included). Some people also call it the “Blue Lagoon of the North”. Mývatn baths is smaller then the Blue Lagoon and therefore a little bit more intimate. After a day full of different highlights, you return to Akureyri and catch the late afternoon flight to Reykjavík.
